WHAT’S NEW?
French accordionist, Richard Galliano, discovers the music of the Nordeste in Brazil with a team from dev.tv.
A musical documentary
dev.tv is producing a documentary about forró, the emblematic music from the state of Paraíba in the Nordeste in Brazil.
Richard Galliano, one of the greatest current jazz and tango musicians, has agreed to meet and play with Brazilian artists in Paraíba, exclusively for our film.
The film’s world premiere will take place on January 27th, 2008 at the Basel_Karlsruhe Forum.
Forró, a social bond
The forró music and dance represent the heart and soul of Paraíba, one of the poorest states in Brazil. Despite the glaring social and ethnic differences, forró music acts as a social bond.
Forró music serves as a vehicle for all of society’s hopes and disillusions; whether romantic, political or satirical, it is the most popular method of expression.
Today, forró music is threatened by the lack of interest of national media for local culture and the plugging of North-American culture by the same media.
‘Global’ to the rescue of ‘local’
By its ability to gather together people and minimise their differences, forró music is an important factor in development.
dev.tv, which for the first time is working in a cultural domain, would like to offer forró music an international audience. In the age of globalisation, perhaps the survival of a threatened local culture can be helped by international recognition.
To help this transition, dev.tv invited an internationally renowned musician to travel to Brazil to discover and play this music with local artists. Richard Galliano, one of the most brilliant musicians of his generation, serves in the film as a bridge between the North and South.
Acknowledgments:
This film has been made possible thanks to the support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, the Government of Paraíba, the municipalities of Campina Grande and Patos, Catherine and Pierre Landolt, Rilavia Cardoso and Ajalmar Maia.
