dev.tv selection at this year’s FIFAM

Our film La Sécheresse du Coeur (The Drought of the Heart) has been selected for competition at this year’s Montreal International Adventure Film Festival (FIFAM). The festival will take place from 24th to 27th October 2007.

The 2007 selection includes the best 26 films chosen among over 100 films submitted.

The Drought of the Heart
On one hand, nomads accept natural desertification because it is slow and part of the way things are. On the other hand, they suffer from the aggressive invasion of the “desert business”, and call it “the drought of the heart”.

Thanks to GPS, off-road vehicle drivers have become increasingly reckless in the Sahara, causing severe damage to the frail desert ecosystem. It can take decades for nature to repair the damage one 4X4 vehicle can do. Yet, for the surviving nomads of southern Morocco, this is just the most recent of a series of problems threatening their livelihood. They are forced to take refuge in regions that are getting smaller every year and over-graze sparse pasture.

Ali Sbai, an accomplished physicist and high level official in the UN, was born in a tent to a nomad family. In this film, Dr. Sbai goes back to his birthplace in the shifting dunes of southern Morocco. Dr. Sbai will discover that as fertile land is under threat, so just as much is the frail, arid ecosystem and way of life of the nomad.
