Cash in Hand - 2x22’ - English
October 2009

Episode 1/2 - Episode 2/2 -

Presented by BBC World’s presenter Zeinab Badawi, Cash in Hand is a two part series that explores a simple but controversial idea that governments can literally give cash payments to poor people to stop them being poor.
Around twenty countries have been following some version of conditional cash transfers, or CCT’s, whereby poor families are given money to encourage them to follow patterns of behaviour that will help lift them out of poverty, like sending their children to school instead of to the fields to work.

In the first episode the discussion is intercut with sequences in Mexico and Brazil with the programmes beneficiaries in those countries while in the second episode we visit Colombia and New York.
